From Osaka or Kyoto: Kansai-Hiroshima#
Coverage includes ordinary-class travel on the Sanyo Shinkansen between Shin-Osaka and Hiroshima, eligible limited express services such as Haruka, Kuroshio, Kounotori and Kinosaki, and ordinary JR trains. The Hiroshima–Hakata section and the Tokaido and Kyushu Shinkansen are excluded.
Starting in Kyoto does not automatically make the Kyoto–Shin-Osaka Shinkansen section eligible. Check the connection on the official coverage map. If you go only as far as Okayama, the Kansai Wide Pass is also a candidate; you need not start with the wider product.
From Fukuoka or Hakata: Hiroshima-Yamaguchi#
The Hiroshima-Yamaguchi pass includes ordinary-class Sanyo Shinkansen travel between Mihara and Hakata and eligible JR lines. The Mihara–Shin-Osaka section and the Tokaido and Kyushu Shinkansen are excluded. Coverage for departures from Hakata
Do not choose a JR Kyushu pass just because you depart from Fukuoka. For Hiroshima, check Sanyo Shinkansen coverage separately. Conversely, if your trip links Osaka and Hakata, do not assume either of these two products covers the entire journey: compare broader products and individual tickets again.
Miyajima: check the ferry operator and visitor tax#
Both products include the JR West Miyajima Ferry. This does not mean every operator’s ferry is included, and the official pass information separately specifies a ¥100 visitor tax. Check the ferry coverage and visitor tax.
For travel from Hiroshima Station to the island, list the railway, ferry and transport on the island separately so you do not overlook extra costs. An included ferry does not imply that admission to island attractions is covered.

Buying, collecting and reserving Shinkansen seats#
You can buy through the official online service or obtain an exchange order from an overseas agency. For official online collection, bring your reservation number, identification number, payment card and passport, and check the stations handling your product. Official collection guide
Reserve a seat before traveling. Official online pass purchases support online reservations, and after collection you can also reserve at machines or counters using the pass. A pass does not guarantee a seat on a fully booked train.
Check seat classes and oversized baggage, and make sure the dates on your confirmation screen and physical reserved-seat ticket match.
Refund channels and fees#
For an agency exchange order, contact the seller before exchange. After exchange, refunds are handled at exchange counters in Japan for an unused pass within its validity period, with a stated fee of 10% and a ¥220 minimum. Exchange order and physical pass refund conditions
Official online purchases have separate conditions. Distinguish online refunds before collection from refunds at sales locations in Japan after collection; the conditions table lists ¥560 for other passes. The deadline also depends on whether seats are reserved, so check the online-only change and refund conditions PDF.

Does a Hiroshima round trip always make the pass worthwhile?#
A return journey alone is not enough to decide. Total the individual fares for your travel date, train and seat type, then add only extra journeys within the pass validity period. For a one-way itinerary with a flight from the other end, comparing against return fares inflates the apparent saving. Use the route fare lookup guide and pass comparison method.
