How early should I buy a Japan Rail Pass?#
Pass purchase, daily service hours and train-seat sales are three different clocks, all in Japan Standard Time (JST, UTC+09:00).
| Task | Published opening or hours |
|---|---|
| Buy a nationwide pass through JRPR | From 04:00 one month before the desired pass start date |
| Use the JRPR purchase and reservation service | Daily 04:00–23:30 |
| Reserve a train seat | Normally from 10:00 one month before the train’s departure date |
Work backward from your first important train. Confirm the pass start date, purchase within the sales window, then use the separate seat-booking window. Calendar exceptions apply when the previous month has no matching date; “one month” does not always mean 30 days. Check the JRPR terms and official booking calendar rules.

Choose your purchase route before creating an account#
Have your travel dates, exact product, class and travellers’ passport details ready. Then choose the matching route below. This guide’s four numbered steps apply to a nationwide pass purchased through JRPR.
| Your route | What to do next |
|---|---|
| Official national-pass purchase through JRPR | Follow steps 1–4 below, then separately complete seat reservations and pickup. |
| Japanese national living overseas | Do not use JRPR: it cannot sell or reserve for this eligibility route. Check the separate residence-document requirements before asking a designated overseas agency for an Exchange Order. |
| National-pass Exchange Order from an overseas agency | Check the seller’s exchange documents and deadline, then use the pickup guide. Creating a JRPR account does not convert that purchase into a JRPR pass. |
| Regional or mobile pass | Start from that product’s own guide; its purchase and boarding process can differ. |
Stop before paying if the product name, duration, class or start date on the final screen differs from your plan. Do not buy a second pass just to make a reservation.

1. Check eligibility, price and required documents#
- Map your actual journey
- Check the pass and eligibility
- Compare purchase channels
- Confirm the final conditions
Check the official requirement for a passport and a credit card in the purchaser’s own name. Enter your real email, password, passport number and card details only on your own official booking screen; keep them out of screenshots and shared material.
2. Use your own account on the official reservation site#
The Purchase link in the official guide leads to JAPAN RAIL PASS Reservation. The initial screen provides email and password login and a Create a New Account link. If you do not have an account, complete the official registration yourself. Do not send your password or the URL from a verification email to this site’s operator or an external chat.
3. Review the pass and payment details#
After logging in, use Reserve JAPAN RAIL PASS in My Menu to check the duration, class, start date and travellers. Match names to passports, confirm the pass conditions and payment amount, and make your own decision to pay.
For a group purchase, check every traveller’s passport details and eligibility. The general purchase guide and manual phrase the companion limit differently, so groups should also check the number accepted by the actual purchase screen. 4. Save confirmation and plan collection#
Store the confirmation email and purchase number securely. After an online purchase, you still need to collect the pass and any reserved-seat tickets. Hide names, purchase numbers, confirmation URLs, QR codes and barcodes before sharing a screenshot of an email.
Next, reserve your seats and decide on a collection point and required documents. Avoid choosing a counter whose collection deadline is earlier than your flight’s arrival.
Three separate completion checks before you travel#
| Stage | What to check in your own records | What is still outstanding |
|---|---|---|
| Pass purchased | A completed purchase with the correct travellers, class, duration and start date; save its purchase number. | Seats are not reserved merely because payment succeeded. |
| Seats booked | The completed itinerary shows your date, stations, train and assigned seats. | The online itinerary is not the collected pass and seat tickets. |
| Pass and seat tickets collected | Check the issued pass period and every required seat ticket against your journey. | Recheck the platform and train operation before departure. |
This sequence applies to a nationwide pass bought through JRPR. Mobile and regional products can use different boarding credentials. Official JRPR purchase, reservation and collection sequence.
Practice case — a fictional 20–26 November, 7-day Ordinary pass: selecting these dates or seeing a card-authentication screen is still an incomplete purchase. In your own account, check that the purchase is completed and the pass details match. A later seat booking needs its own completed itinerary. At collection, compare the issued dates and required seat tickets again. This example demonstrates the checks; it is not a payment or reservation made by this guide.

Refunds depend on where you bought and whether you collected#
| Status | Where and how to apply |
|---|---|
| Bought through JRPR; not collected | Apply through JRPR by 23:30 Japan time on the day before the start date. Fee: ¥560 per pass. |
| Bought through JRPR; collected but unused | Apply at a pass distribution office before the start date, with a valid unused pass. The fee is ¥560 per pass. Present the physical payment card; refunds cannot be processed for virtual cards or cards without a physical card. |
| Agency Exchange Order; not exchanged | Apply to the seller and check its fees. |
| Agency Exchange Order already exchanged for a pass | Check conditions, including application before the start date, at an exchange office in Japan. A deduction of 10% of the listed selling price applies. |
Reserved-seat tickets need to be cancelled as required. Do not assume that unused days can be refunded proportionally after you start using the pass. This table covers the national pass; regional passes have separate rules. National-pass conditions of use
