3-day prices and eligibility#
The adult category starts at age 12; child fares apply to ages 6–11. You need a passport issued by a government outside Japan and Temporary Visitor status. A non-Japanese nationality alone does not establish eligibility if you have another status, such as Student. Official Mini Pass prices and eligibility
Also see eligibility for nationwide and regional passes. The label “JR pass” does not mean every company uses the same eligibility rules.
Using it in Osaka, Kyoto, Nara and Kansai Airport#
The basic coverage is JR local, rapid and Special Rapid services within the official area. Kansai Airport Rapid is included, and the map covers destinations such as Osaka, Kyoto, Kobe, Nara, JR Namba and Universal City. Check your actual stations on the official coverage map.
You cannot board Haruka with the pass alone: you need a separate limited express ticket for the covered section. Both the base fare and limited express charge are separate for Shinkansen travel, and paid seats such as A-SEAT also require a supplement. Do not confuse JR Namba with another operator’s Namba station just because the area name is the same.
If you plan several limited express journeys, compare Mini plus all supplements against the Kansai Wide Pass, which includes Haruka and other eligible services.
Paper exchange version versus WEST QR#
| Step | Paper exchange version | WEST QR version |
|---|---|---|
| After purchase | Collect the physical pass with your exchange order and passport | Register the voucher in a WEST QR account |
| Start and validity | From 00:00 on the first day to 24:00 on the last day | Activate after 04:00 on the first day; valid until 24:00 on the last day |
| At the gates | The collected pass | A live QR code on an internet-connected smartphone |
Both versions cover 3 consecutive days, not 72 hours from first use. First check whether the purchase screen says WEST QR. Paper version terms · QR version terms

WEST QR: from registration to the gates#
- Open the link in the voucher supplied by the overseas seller, create an account and register the ticket.
- Check the travel date and passenger details, then select “Use ticket” after 04:00 Japan time on the first day of use.
- Display the travel QR code at the gates. Screenshots and printed QR codes cannot be used.
- At a gate without a QR reader, follow the station-QR scanning procedure in the official guide. Ask staff if the entry or exit record does not match your journey.
You can register companions’ tickets on one phone when everyone follows the same itinerary. Each person’s ticket must be selected and processed separately. If your group plans to split up, decide how to register the tickets before creating the account setup. Official WEST QR registration and gate guide
Practice case — one fictional traveller: registering the voucher makes the ticket available in the account; it does not mean the first travel day has started. On the intended first day, check the date before choosing “Use ticket.” At the station, process the live ticket’s entry, then its exit at the destination. A registration confirmation or an unprocessed QR display does not prove that either gate action succeeded.

WEST QR will not open or the gate rejects it: what to check#
Use the live travel QR code, not the QR code printed on a voucher or saved as a screenshot. These checks follow the official WEST QR user guide.
| What you see | Next action |
|---|---|
| No ticket or travel QR appears | Confirm that the phone is connected to the internet, you are signed into the account holding the ticket, and registration is complete. Check activation on the intended first travel day. |
| The QR reader gives an error | Use the screen’s refresh control, enlarge the live code and increase display brightness. If the error remains, show staff your Ticket No. |
| No QR reader at the gate | Use the official station-QR procedure. Check that the screen records the correct station and ENTRANCE or EXIT. |
| Wrong station or entry/exit state | Ask staff or use the gate call button. Do not assume you can edit the entry/exit operation yourself. |
Done: the correct traveler’s ticket has processed the correct entry or exit. For a group, repeat for each ticket. Keep enough battery and connectivity for the exit too; a screenshot is not an offline substitute.

Bring your passport to exchange a paper-version voucher#
For the paper version, exchange the overseas seller’s E-TICKET for a pass at a designated location within 3 months of issuance. Do not queue to convert a WEST QR product into a paper pass, or assume a QR code on a paper exchange voucher is itself a travel QR code. Paper version exchange locations and procedure
Before departure, check your confirmation email for the product format and eligible exchange stations, and organize your collection documents. Having an exchange location at a station does not mean its counter stays open late at night.
Check activation status before canceling#
For WEST QR, ask the travel agency about a refund before selecting “Use ticket.” No refund is available after activation. JR stations do not handle changes or refunds for this product, so also check the seller’s fees. QR Mini Pass changes and refunds
For the paper version, contact the seller before exchange, or a counter at an exchange location in Japan after exchange. The stated conditions allow an unused pass to be refunded within its validity period with a 10% fee, subject to a ¥220 minimum. Paper Mini Pass refund conditions

Deciding whether Mini fits your itinerary#
Add the fares for only your eligible JR journeys across the 3 days. A day spent walking near your hotel or using mainly non-JR trains reduces the pass’s value. Return to the Kansai pass comparison to decide your travel area, then look up fares for the actual stations and trains before buying.
A completed three-day comparison you can copy
Fictional worksheet: the routes are planning examples, and every individual fare below is invented to demonstrate the arithmetic. These are not current fares or timetable quotes. The pass price is the separately listed adult Mini price; replace the sample fares with your own official quotes.
| Date | Stations and direction | Train / seat for this sample | Fictional individual fares |
|---|---|---|---|
| 20 November | Osaka → Kyoto → Osaka | JR Special Rapid, ordinary non-reserved | ¥600 each way = ¥1,200 |
| 21 November | Osaka → Sannomiya → Osaka | JR local or rapid, ordinary non-reserved | ¥500 each way = ¥1,000 |
| 22 November | Osaka → JR Nara → Osaka | JR Yamatoji Rapid, ordinary non-reserved | ¥550 each way = ¥1,100 |
The fictional covered-fare total is ¥3,300. Against the listed adult pass price of ¥3,000, that leaves ¥300 before extras. If a separate subway journey costs a fictional ¥400, both options still pay it: tickets total ¥3,700; pass plus subway total ¥3,400. Do not count that subway fare as a saving produced by Mini.
Result: this sample favours Mini by ¥300, but changing a JR journey to a private railway, removing a trip or adding a charge can change the answer. The dates must fit the same three consecutive days. This example includes no Shinkansen, Haruka or paid reserved seat.
