When is the best time to reserve JR Pass seats?#

Reserve once your itinerary is firm and the relevant booking window opens. JRPR normally opens seats at 10:00 Japan time one month before departure. A purchase completed earlier that morning does not itself reserve a train.

Prioritise all-reserved trains, groups wanting adjacent seats and journeys needing oversized baggage space. If you can travel at several times, compare departures before choosing. An opening time is not a guarantee of availability. JRPR booking-window rules.

Do I need a reservation, and what if I board without one?#

A seat reservation is not required for every covered train. Where a train has non-reserved cars, a valid pass can cover travel in the appropriate car, but a seat is not guaranteed. Do not sit in a reserved seat without its reservation.

For an all-reserved service, arrange the required ticket before boarding; do not assume a pass alone allows standing. Yufuin no Mori is all-reserved. During designated peak periods, Nozomi has no non-reserved seats; national-pass users need the appropriate special ticket. JR Central’s peak-period rules.

If you arrive without the required reservation, ask staff about the next available service before passing the gates. See the pass’s seat conditions.

Do I need to buy a Shinkansen ticket if I have a JR Pass?#

For an included journey in your pass’s class, request a covered seat reservation rather than buying the full journey again. First verify the route, train and class. Nozomi/Mizuho special tickets and excluded sections are separate purchases.

An individual-ticket checkout, such as Smart EX, sells a separate product; it does not automatically apply your national pass. Use the official pass reservation service for an eligible JRPR purchase, or the applicable station procedure. Official purchase and reservation workflow.

The official process starts with JAPAN RAIL PASS List in My Menu, then Reserve a Seat for the relevant pass. Do not assume an Exchange Order bought through another channel offers the same online reservation function.

Before step 1: identify whether your national pass was actually purchased through JRPR. If it came from an overseas agency, use the station booking procedure after exchange instead; if it is a regional pass, follow its named booking service. Keep the desired train’s date, departure station, arrival station and passenger count beside you.

If you want Nozomi or Mizuho, leave the ordinary JRPR seat-booking workflow: JRPR excludes these trains. With a nationwide pass, buy the separate pass-holder Nozomi/Mizuho special ticket before boarding at an eligible JR reserved-seat ticket machine, JR ticket office, Travel Service Center or JR-designated agency sales office in Japan. Check your pass validity, direction, section, train and class; bring and use the pass together with that ticket. Availability is not guaranteed. See the official special-ticket sales locations and rules.

Review the route results, train service and car class before choosing a seat. Check the eligible car class and oversized-baggage seat conditions. JRPR does not search or reserve Nozomi or Mizuho. Follow the separate special-ticket purchase steps for those trains. The official manual also explains restrictions on overlapping reservations and the number of bookings.

4. Confirm completion and collect tickets#

At the final review, check the date, stations, train, passengers and seats. Verify the completed booking and email, then collect the required pass and reserved-seat tickets before boarding. Reaching the seat-selection screen does not mean a reservation has been completed.

Mark the seat task complete only when your own completed itinerary shows the intended date, stations, train and assigned seat. Collection remains a separate task. Reserve at a ticket machine after collecting the pass#

  1. Select the JAPAN RAIL PASS menu at a reserved-seat ticket machine and scan the pass QR code or enter the reservation number and passport number.
  2. Set the departure and arrival stations, travel date and time, then select a train and seat. If you already booked online, choose to issue the tickets for that reservation.
  3. Review the details, then check the date, train and seat on the issued ticket.

A machine that issues reserved-seat tickets is not necessarily a machine that can issue your initial pass. Follow counter guidance for changes or cancellations after ticket issuance. Reserved-seat ticket procedures

How do I cancel a JR Pass seat reservation?#

Cancel unused reservations before departure. Canceling a seat itinerary is different from refunding the pass. In JRPR, open your purchased pass, then the itinerary’s check/change/cancel option. Online cancellation applies to the itinerary, not an individual ticket within it.

Once tickets have been issued, ask a station counter. Confirm the cancellation on screen and recheck any connecting journeys you still need. JRPR cancellation instructions. For the pass purchase itself, see pass refund conditions.

Can I cancel a Shinkansen ticket and get a refund?#

Usually an unused eligible ticket can be refunded, but the fee and deadline depend on the product and seller. Do not apply the pass refund fee to an individual Shinkansen ticket.

Purchase typeWhat to check
Ordinary JR ticketsBase-fare refund fee is generally ¥220. For a reserved-seat ticket component, the published fee is ¥340 until two days before departure, then 30% with a ¥340 minimum until departure. Components and exceptions matter.
Smart EXUse the product-specific refund procedure. Online handling depends on whether you entered the gates or collected paper tickets; do not copy ordinary-ticket fees.

If no trains appear or seats are sold out#

If there are no results, first check station names, date, pass validity and coverage. Also check for an overlapping reservation at the same time. Search other departure times or connections, but do not assume that you can board an all-reserved train without a reservation.

If you will not use a booked train, cancel before departure to release the seat. Check the additional conditions for separate online reservations for Yufuin no Mori and seats with oversized baggage space.

What should I do if I miss my reserved train?#

Do not carry the old train’s seat number onto the next departure. If departure is still ahead, change or cancel the reservation before the booked train leaves. After it has left, show your pass and seat ticket to station staff and identify the next service you want.

  1. Check that the pass is still valid for that date, route, train and class.
  2. Ask what reservation or ticket is required for the replacement train. Non-reserved travel is an option only where that train has an eligible non-reserved car; an empty reserved seat is not permission to use it.
  3. Recheck luggage arrangements. Oversized baggage space booked on the missed train does not reserve space on another departure.

Individual tickets, discount tickets and Smart EX bookings have their own missed-train conditions. Do not assume the same fee or next-train entitlement applies to each. See the national-pass seat and cancellation conditions and JR Central’s missed-train baggage instructions.
