Check passport eligibility for all three products#
The Hokkaido Rail Pass, Sapporo–Noboribetsu Area Pass and Sapporo–Furano Area Pass require an original non-Japanese passport. Check each product’s eligibility rather than copying the national pass’s Temporary Visitor requirement.
A photocopy or residence card cannot replace the required passport. Carry it during travel and show it when requested. Read the current product conditions before paying.

Choosing Noboribetsu, Furano or the wider Hokkaido pass#
- Noboribetsu regional pass: toward New Chitose Airport, Sapporo, Otaru and Noboribetsu. Toya is excluded.
- Furano regional pass: toward New Chitose Airport, Sapporo, Otaru, Asahikawa, Biei and Furano. Tomamu is excluded.
- Hokkaido Rail Pass: JR Hokkaido lines except the Hokkaido Shinkansen. South Hokkaido Railway, subways and trams are excluded.
The two regional passes do not include JR Hokkaido buses. The wider pass permits only some JR Hokkaido buses, so check the bus operator and route separately. Official maps and conditions
If your itinerary includes both Noboribetsu and Furano, do not start by buying two 4-day passes. Compare the wider pass and individual tickets for the same itinerary too. Keep hotel access and buses to attractions separate in the pass cost comparison.
Looking for a Sapporo JR 1-day or 3-day pass?#
The foreign-visitor product group above has no 1-day or 3-day option. A three-night, four-day stay does not by itself make a 4-day pass good value. If you spend most of the trip in Sapporo, first add subway fares and individual JR fares, then count the days with long-distance limited express travel. Current JR Hokkaido product catalog
A 4-day pass starting November 2 runs consecutively from November 2 through 5. To choose between starting it on an airport-only arrival day or on the following day when longer travel begins, compare totals including any separate airport ticket. Unused days cannot be carried forward.
How to buy and prepare for exchange at New Chitose or Sapporo#
- Purchase through JR-EAST Train Reservation: prepare your original passport and membership number or booking confirmation email.
- Purchase through an overseas agency: prepare your original passport and a paper or electronic exchange order with the same name as your passport. Note the distinction between 3 months from issuance for a paper exchange order and 90 days for an electronic exchange order.
- Purchase locally: present your passport at a designated counter and pay in yen cash or by credit card.
- Collection: designated counters at New Chitose Airport and Sapporo stations are common options. Noboribetsu Station also handles the Noboribetsu regional pass, and Asahikawa Station handles the Furano regional pass. Check the counter and hours for your specific product before visiting.
Every traveler needs their original passport. A residence card or passport copy is not a substitute. These products are for holders of non-Japanese passports. Official eligibility, purchase and exchange guide

Exchange counter locations and hours: New Chitose and Sapporo#
| Station | Rail pass counter | Service hours |
|---|---|---|
| New Chitose Airport Station | JR Information Desk on basement level 1 of the domestic terminal, in the area in front of the station ticket gates | 08:30–19:00 |

Based on the official JR Hokkaido exchange-counter map, rechecked on 24 October 2026. Both counters handle the Hokkaido Rail Pass, Sapporo–Noboribetsu and Sapporo–Furano passes. General tourist information hours may differ from rail pass service hours.
After arriving at New Chitose’s international terminal, use the second-floor connecting passage to the domestic terminal, then go down to basement level 1. The train platforms are on basement level 2, so exchange your pass before descending to board. Official route from international arrivals to the JR station
Machine hours checked 24 October 2026: New Chitose Airport 07:00–22:00; Sapporo 05:30–23:50, with JR-EAST Train Reservation pickup available until 23:30. These are separate from the counter hours above and apply only to eligible machine transactions. At Sapporo, machines are in the west and east concourses; at New Chitose Airport, the machine is beside the JR Information Desk. Official machine locations and hours.
For a late arrival, allow for the walk from arrivals and any queue. A counter-only voucher cannot be exchanged just because a machine remains open. If collection cannot be completed, ask staff what ticket is needed for your immediate journey rather than boarding with the voucher.

First arrival: from a voucher to the train you will actually board#
Finish collection before going to the platform. An exchange order or purchase confirmation is not the physical rail pass you put through a gate.
- Identify your exact pass and start date. For an airport-to-Sapporo journey, confirm that the airport leg falls within those dates and your pass area.
- Use the matching counter or eligible machine procedure. Check the printed pass name and validity dates immediately.
- Choose the train and seat type. Rapid Airport has both ordinary unreserved seating and a reserved U-seat car; JR Hokkaido limited express trains have reserved seats only. Obtain the required seat ticket for your choice.
- Put only the rail pass through the automatic gate and retrieve it. Match the departure board and, if reserved, the car and seat shown on the seat ticket.

Keep the pass safe: JR Hokkaido does not reissue a lost or stolen pass. If a train is missed or disrupted, show staff the pass and seat ticket before making a new arrangement; a later reserved seat is not automatically assigned.

From seat reservations to the ticket gates#
- Choose a train and travel date within the pass area. JR Hokkaido limited express trains have reserved seats only, so plan to secure a seat in advance.
- Obtain a reserved-seat ticket through JR-EAST Train Reservation, a designated counter or a reserved-seat ticket machine. Distinguish a completed reservation from actual ticket issuance.
- Insert the rail pass at the gate and retrieve it after passing through. Do not insert the reserved-seat ticket instead.
- Go to the car and seat shown on your seat ticket. If you need a different train, ask the counter to make the change before departure.

Refunds differ before exchange, before use and after use#
| Current status | How it is handled |
|---|---|
| Agency exchange order not yet exchanged | Ask the agency about refund eligibility and fees. |
| Exchanged or purchased physical pass is unused | Apply at a designated sales or exchange location before the start date or while still unused within its validity period. The standard fee is 10% of the sale price; passes purchased through JR-EAST Train Reservation are listed with a ¥560 fee. |
| Use has started | The guidance does not allow extensions or refunds for service cancellations, delays or similar reasons. |
You cannot change the physical pass to another type or change its start date, so check dates immediately after issuance. These conditions follow the official JR Hokkaido refund conditions in Korean. Do not apply ordinary-ticket refund fees to this pass.
