JR Pass calculator: is a pass worth it for your trip?

A cheap pass is not enough: match route coverage, validity, sales channel and supplements before comparing total costs.

1. Travellers and purchase conditions

Child eligibility varies by product. JR child fares generally cover ages 6–11; younger children may need a ticket for their own seat. Check each product’s official conditions.

2. Your actual journeys

Choose a registered route or enter your own confirmed fare. Round trips use the same one-way fare twice. Add separate one-way rows if return fares differ.

The example is not an itinerary recommendation. Adjust dates, train, seat and product conditions for your trip.

3. Comparison settings

The same extra cost is added to every pass offer. Review route-specific costs and supplements in each result. You can change the reference exchange rate.

Child entries generally concern paid tickets for ages 6–11. Check primary-school exceptions, seats for under-6s and product-specific age-assessment dates. Child totals are not guessed as half the adult total.

Registered reference routes currently cover JR and Tokyo subway journeys. For SUNQ bus trips, enter confirmed fares and coverage manually; SUNQ does not cover JR trains.

How to read the results

  • “Check first” means an amount or condition is missing. It does not mean zero or free.
  • “User assumption” means edited fares, pass prices or coverage were used. It is separate from official reference data.
  • Automatic start dates compare the entered trips. They do not optimize timetables, availability or your travel route.
  • Nozomi and Mizuho rules differ between nationwide and regional passes. Short sections without a supplementary-ticket product may require separate tickets.

Common questions

How do I enter a route that is not listed?

Choose manual entry and enter the one-way adult and child fares you confirmed. Passes with unknown coverage stay on hold. Override coverage only after checking the official map and conditions.

Can I compare JR, subway and bus passes?

Registered products can be compared against the same trip. JR passes do not cover subways or most private railways, and SUNQ is not a rail pass. Sharing a region does not establish coverage.

What if my return fare is not twice the one-way price?

Enter outbound and return travel as separate one-way rows. Confirm round-trip discounts and special-product conditions separately.
