First choose a city day or a wider rail trip#
Start with where you will travel, not how many nights you are staying in Tokyo. “Tokyo JR pass” is not one product with interchangeable 1-, 3- and 5-day versions.
- One day inside Tokyo: list your JR stations and any separate subway journeys. Compare the covered JR fares with Tokunai Pass.
- Three days with trips outside central Tokyo: put your stations on the Tokyo Wide coverage map. Compare the combined eligible fares, rather than buying because your stay lasts three days.
- Longer journeys toward Tohoku, Nagano or Niigata: check the exact JR EAST PASS product and map in the table below.
Worked planning example: Shinjuku–Shibuya by JR belongs in the city-day calculation. A later Kamakura trip belongs in a separate comparison; Enoden from Kamakura to Hase remains an extra cost. Write those as separate legs before choosing a pass. This example shows how to sort a route, not a claim that either pass saves money.

The 1-day, 3-day, 5-day and 10-day products serve different trips#
| Product | Validity | Adult / child | Itinerary to compare |
|---|---|---|---|
| Tokunai Pass (Tokyo Metropolitan District Pass) | 1 day | ¥870 / ¥430 | JR local and rapid trains within Tokyo’s 23 wards |
| JR TOKYO Wide Pass | 3 consecutive days | ¥16,000 / ¥8,000 | Tokyo plus nearby destinations |
| JR EAST PASS | 5 consecutive days | ¥35,000 / ¥17,500 | Long-distance journeys in eastern Japan |
| JR EAST PASS | 10 consecutive days | ¥50,000 / ¥25,000 | Eastern Japan journeys spread across a longer stay |
Child fares apply to ages 6–11. Prices follow the official Tokunai, Tokyo Wide and JR EAST PASS listings from the official operators. Search results for a “Tokyo pass” may describe different products: compare the exact name and validity period.

Where can you buy a 1-day Tokyo JR pass?#
Buy the Tokunai Pass from JR East reserved-seat ticket machines within its area. It covers ordinary JR trains in Tokyo’s 23 wards, rather than Shinkansen, Narita Airport limited express services, Tokyo Metro or Toei Subway. Official coverage and sales locations
- List the stations you will visit that day and separate JR journeys from subway journeys.
- Add only the individual JR fares and compare that total with the ¥870 adult price.
- If you will use JR infrequently, compare an IC card or individual tickets. For a subway-focused day, assess subway tickets separately.
Do not read “1 day” as a 24-hour ticket. Check the date of use shown when buying, and ask station staff about a journey continuing into the following day.
Before confirming at the machine: check that the product is Tokunai Pass, that the displayed day is the day you will travel, and that your planned JR stations are within its map. Done: you have the ticket for the intended day, not just a search result or payment screen. If you cannot identify the product on the machine, show staff its exact official name before paying. Tokyo Wide routes: Kamakura, subways and coverage boundaries#
The Wide Pass includes JR East services within its map and specified lines such as Tokyo Monorail, Izukyu, Fujikyu and Rinkai Line. Through limited express services to Tobu lines have conditions, including journeys starting or ending at JR stations. It cannot be used for a Tokyo–Shin-Osaka journey on the Tokaido Shinkansen. Official included routes
For Kamakura, calculate the JR Yokosuka Line journey separately from local transport. JR travel as far as Kamakura Station falls within the Wide Pass area, but Enoden trips to Hase or Enoshima cost extra. The Yokosuka Line connects toward Tokyo and Yokohama. JR Kamakura Station routes and timetables
Tokyo Metro, Toei Subway and Enoden are not listed among the Wide Pass’s included lines. Instead of choosing a 3-day pass for one Kamakura day trip, add the JR costs for your other two days and compare whether the pass pays off.
The JR EAST PASS is worth comparing for a wider journey to Tohoku, Nagano or Niigata, but excludes Izukyu and Fujikyu, which the Wide Pass includes. A more expensive pass does not necessarily cover every line. JR EAST PASS coverage and exceptions
Check a Tokyo Wide route one leg at a time#
A destination being inside the area does not make every route to it eligible. Use the official Tokyo Wide map and line conditions beside your route search.
- Enter the actual departure and arrival stations, date and time. Keep the train names and any transfer stations.
- Split the result whenever the railway operator changes. Compare each leg with the included lines and any through-train conditions.
- For a Tokyo–Kamakura–Hase plan, mark the JR journey to Kamakura separately from the Enoden journey to Hase. The second leg is an additional fare.
- If the search suggests the Tokaido Shinkansen, do not count that leg as covered by Tokyo Wide. Choose a valid route or budget a separate ticket.
Done: each leg has either “included by this exact pass” or “separate ticket” beside it. If a boundary or through train remains unclear, show the complete route to railway staff before boarding. For booking, use JR-EAST Train Reservation; the nationwide JAPAN RAIL PASS booking service is a different service.

Students, residents of Japan and the 3-day validity period#
The Wide Pass and JR EAST PASS are for holders of valid non-Japanese passports and do not require Temporary Visitor status. Residents of Japan can consider them if they meet this condition, but there is no student discount. A passport copy cannot be used to issue the pass. Do not apply the nationwide pass rules automatically: check the eligibility differences between products. JR East purchase eligibility
The Wide Pass is valid for three consecutive days from your chosen start date. Starting October 21 means October 21, 22 and 23—not nonconsecutive dates such as October 21, 23 and 25. If you activate it on your arrival day, that day counts as day one. Mark airport journeys and nearby day trips on the same calendar.
Purchase, seat reservation and collection are separate steps#
- At JR-EAST Train Reservation, check the exact product, start date and passport details before buying. You can also compare exchange orders from overseas travel agencies and purchases at designated counters in Japan.
- Choose your travel date and stations, then reserve an ordinary-class seat on an eligible train. Buying the pass does not automatically assign a seat.
- After arriving in Japan, take your original passport and reservation details to a designated counter or compatible passport-reader ticket machine to collect the pass. For agency purchases, bring the exchange order too.
- Check the train number, date and seat before traveling. Follow local instructions for gates on non-JR sections.
These steps follow the official purchase and collection guide and Wide Pass terms. Continue with the seat reservation guide, or compare Narita N’EX options in the airport round-trip ticket guide.
First-use check: your confirmation or agency voucher proves a purchase; it is not the collected pass. After collection, check the pass name and validity dates, then collect any reserved-seat tickets and compare their stations, date and train with your plan. Use the collected pass for eligible gates and keep the seat ticket for finding your car and seat. JR East’s purchase → pickup → use guide.

Before changing dates or requesting a refund#
There are restrictions on changing validity dates after collecting a physical pass. The Wide Pass terms describe a 10% fee for refunding an unused pass within its validity period, and a reserved train’s departure can restrict refunds even if the pass is unused. For an online purchase that you have not collected, first check the separate cancellation procedure on the purchase website. Once use has started, extensions or refunds for service cancellations or delays are generally not allowed. Wide Pass refund conditions

Collecting a pass at Tokyo or Shinjuku Station#
Plan city-center collection of the Tokyo Wide Pass or JR EAST PASS around a JR EAST Travel Service Center. At Tokyo Station, use the center on the left outside the Marunouchi North Gate on the first floor (08:30–19:00). At Shinjuku Station, use the center on the right outside the New South Gate (08:00–19:00). These details follow the official Tokyo Station guide and official Shinjuku Station guide.
JR East states that passes cannot be collected at ordinary Midori-no-Madoguchi ticket offices, except for the Narita Airport station exception. Ordinary reserved-seat ticket machines also differ from compatible machines equipped with passport readers. Before traveling, select your purchased product in the official collection-location finder, check the station and supported counter or machine, and prepare your original passport plus reservation details or agency exchange order.
