For travel from Hakata to Yufuin, distinguish YUFUIN NO MORI from YUFU. The same destination does not guarantee the same train or onboard facilities. Yufuin no Mori has reserved seats only, and some services run as Yufu on days when Yufuin no Mori does not operate. Check your date first in the official operating calendar and train formation guide.

For a return trip, choose your arrival time and the return departure together. Your choice will differ for an overnight stay in Yufuin and a day trip. Also check whether the service continues to Beppu or terminates at Yufuin, and enter a destination station that matches your actual hotel arrival plan.

How much is a Yufuin no Mori ticket without a pass?#

JR Kyushu publishes ¥6,130 for an adult one-way Hakata–Yufuin journey, including the base fare and reserved-seat limited-express charge. The reserved-seat amount varies by travel date. This published example was checked on 13 October 2026; confirm your departure’s final price.

It is different from the ¥1,500 adult pass-holder online reservation option. Do not use either amount as a universal Hakata–Beppu or return fare. Official fare example (Japanese).

How long does Yufuin no Mori take, and where is its timetable?#

Allow roughly 2 hours 15 minutes between Hakata and Yufuin, depending on the service. The timetable revised 14 March 2026 gives a Hakata 09:17 → Yufuin 11:31 example (2 hours 14 minutes). The listed through service to Beppu takes 3 hours 20 minutes from Hakata.

Check both the timetable and operating-day calendar. A published departure time does not mean the sightseeing train operates every day. Search the actual date and train name before reserving.

The pass online booking service also differs from the nationwide JAPAN RAIL PASS reservation service. Not every agency exchange order can be registered automatically. Check supported sellers and exchange-order formats in the online booking FAQ. For ordinary one-way or return purchases, use “One-way and round-trip tickets” in the official Yufuin no Mori guide.

The online reservation fee is not the full train fare#

The paid advance reservation option for Yufuin no Mori costs ¥1,500 per adult per journey, or ¥750 per child. It is added to the pass price, and a return trip comprises two journeys. For example, one adult reserving both trains in advance pays ¥3,000 in option charges. Do not read this as the price of a return ticket without a pass. The calculation follows the official KRP Option Ticket information.

You can reserve locally without an extra charge within the seat-reservation allowance for your pass. The key decision is whether to pay to secure seats in advance. If Yufuin is your only destination, include JR journeys on other days when comparing the total cost of individual tickets and a pass.

Steps not to miss on the booking screen#

  1. Check that your pass or exchange order supports online booking and register it through the relevant purchase route.
  2. Enter Hakata → Yufuin, the travel date, passenger numbers and direction. Check the return journey separately.
  3. Read the train name, date and seat category in the results. If you want Yufuin no Mori, make sure you have not selected Yufu instead.
  4. Check the option charge and payment method, then complete the reservation.
  5. Keep the confirmation and purchase number, and prepare to collect the actual tickets.

The official FAQ states that pass online reservations open at 10:00 Japan time one month before the travel date. If your date is missing, check both the booking window and the operating calendar. Booth seats are listed as unavailable through this online service. Follow the official FAQ on reservation availability and timing.

Can I take Yufuin no Mori from Yufuin back to Hakata?#

Yes. Search Yufuin → Hakata and reserve the return train separately. The March 2026 timetable includes Yufuin 12:01 → Hakata 14:19, a 2-hour-18-minute example. Confirm that train’s operating date.

For a day trip, subtract arrival-to-return time before deciding what you can do in Yufuin. For an overnight stay, enter the next day for the return. Do not reverse the outbound booking without checking the date, train name and seat confirmation. Official outbound and return timetable.

Is Yufuin no Mori worth taking instead of Yufu?#

Consider it when the train experience is part of your trip. Its raised floor, large windows and wood-toned interior distinguish the sightseeing train from a straightforward transfer. JR Kyushu’s train introduction shows the facilities and formations.

If your priority is an earlier hotel arrival or more time in Yufuin, compare available Yufu departures instead. Our planning recommendation is to choose the arrival time first, then decide how much schedule flexibility the sightseeing experience is worth to you. This is a decision framework, not a first-hand review or a guarantee of a particular view.

What to check when seats are sold out#

The number of seats sold through paid online booking is limited, so an unavailable result online does not represent every seat across every sales channel. It also does not prove that seats remain locally. First compare other departures on the same day, then outbound and return combinations on different dates.

If reaching the destination matters more than the sightseeing train, Limited Express Yufu is another candidate. However, recheck the reserved or unreserved seat designation for your chosen service; do not assume Yufu always has unreserved seats. If you choose a bus or another form of transport, calculate its fare separately from the pass’s rail costs. Check service changes in the official train guide.

Collecting physical tickets and making changes after booking#

Do not board with only the online confirmation screen: collect your pass and reserved-seat tickets. Requirements by purchase channel—including your original passport, exchange order and the physical credit card used online—are listed in the official purchase and collection guide. If collecting after airport arrival, also check the scope of services at Fukuoka Airport’s exchange counter.

Change and cancellation procedures depend on the purchase channel and whether tickets have been collected. Leaving tickets uncollected does not trigger an automatic refund. If you cannot travel, check the conditions in your booking before departure. Follow the Confirm/Change/Refund instructions in the official change and refund FAQ.
