Do not simply halve adult prices for children#
| Duration | Online Ordinary / Green | Overseas agent Ordinary / Green |
|---|---|---|
| 7 days | ¥25,000 / ¥35,000 | ¥27,000 / ¥37,000 |
| 14 days | ¥40,000 / ¥55,000 | ¥42,000 / ¥58,000 |
| 21 days | ¥50,000 / ¥70,000 | ¥53,000 / ¥74,000 |
The official child age band is 6–11. An exception treats a child who was 11 on the online payment date or Exchange Order issue date as a child even if they are 12 when travelling. For trips near a birthday, check the age rules in the official national-pass price guide. In particular, overseas agency child prices are not always exactly half the adult price.

Do children under six need their own reserved seat ticket?#
If a child under six needs their own reserved seat, arrange the appropriate child ticket or eligible child pass. An adult’s reservation does not create a second reserved seat for the child. Ask the operator to price the child’s actual journeys before deciding that a full pass is necessary.
The official JRPR FAQ generally allows infants and small children to travel free, but lists exceptions for their use of a reserved seat, unaccompanied travel and a third or subsequent small child accompanying one adult or child. Infants under one are treated differently for that last number limit. Check your party against JRPR’s “Do children five years old and younger need a ticket?” rather than treating every under-six journey as free.
Before payment, write down each child’s age on the relevant purchase date and whether they need an individual reserved seat. Then add the correct child price to your family budget; do not put the child in another passenger’s assigned seat.

Worked family budget: two adults and one eight-year-old#
Assume three eligible travellers need the same 7-day Ordinary pass: two adults and one child aged eight. Using the official yen prices:
| Purchase channel | Calculation | Pass total |
|---|---|---|
| Official online purchase | 2 × ¥50,000 + ¥25,000 | ¥125,000 |
| Designated overseas agency | 2 × ¥53,000 + ¥27,000 | ¥133,000 |
The difference in this example is ¥8,000 before currency conversion and seller or card fees. This is a hypothetical family calculation, not a family-discount product or a quote. Use the published child price rather than halving an adult agency price. Add your excluded transport and any required supplements before comparing the final family budget. Official adult and child prices.

How much is the Japan Rail Pass in US dollars or pounds?#
There is no fixed official USD or GBP price for the yen-priced online pass. Convert the yen charge using your payment provider’s rate, then add any card or seller fees. The current official online adult Ordinary 7-day price is ¥50,000; an agency quote may use a different yen base.
Formula: yen price ÷ yen per dollar or pound, plus fees. At a hypothetical ¥150 per US dollar, ¥50,000 is about US$333.33 before fees. This is an arithmetic example, not today’s exchange rate or a checkout quote. Official prices and currency settlement conditions.

Is it cheaper to buy the JR Pass in Japan?#
Your purchase channel matters more than where you are standing. Buying through the official online service while in Japan is an online purchase, not a special station-counter discount. Compare the same duration and class in the online and overseas-agency columns above, then include currency and seller fees.
Also check eligibility and the purchase window. Buying after arrival can leave less time for pickup and seat reservations. Official online purchase and collection instructions.

Why is the JR Pass more expensive than older guides say?#
A major nationwide-pass price revision took effect on 1 October 2023. The adult Ordinary 7-day overseas-agency price in the announcement rose from ¥29,650 to ¥50,000. That historical amount is not the current price for every purchase channel; use the current table above.
JR Group’s dated announcement documents the change. It does not establish a single business reason for the price rise. The useful decision is whether your covered travel now exceeds the pass price—not whether an older itinerary once saved money.

Keep the scope of each price clear#
The first table shows adult national-pass prices and the second shows child national-pass prices. Neither is a regional-pass or Nozomi/Mizuho special-ticket price list. Compare the same product, class and purchase channel, even when both options are called seven-day passes.
The checked date is when the official information was reviewed, not the date the price changed. Recheck the final payment amount and conditions at checkout.
How to check the final price#
- Select the product, duration and class in the official price table.
- Check whether you are buying online from the official service or purchasing an overseas agency Exchange Order.
- Review the yen amount, selling currency and fees shown at checkout.
- Open the linked official source again before paying, especially if your purchase date or travel conditions differ from the dated example.
A source-check date records when information was reviewed; it is not a live price feed or a promised next-check deadline. The JR Group price-change announcement confirms the overseas-agency revision for purchases from 2026-10-01, using the local time at the purchase location.

Costs to add before paying#
The official yen price may differ from the amount charged to your card. Record the agency’s selling currency, currency conversion and card fees, excluded routes, and Nozomi/Mizuho special tickets separately. Do not compare products with different classes or durations based only on a coupon discount.
Continue to the online purchase steps once the price is clear, or use the cost comparison calculator to assess your full itinerary.
