JR Pass: worth it? Compare your trip costs

Start with the question you need to answer

How to decide whether a pass is worth it

  1. List each route and date. Enter the return date separately for round trips.
  2. Compare matching trains, seats and purchase conditions. A discount product is not the same as a standard fare.
  3. Add uncovered routes, trips outside validity and applicable Nozomi supplements.
  4. Even when a pass costs less, confirm eligibility, pickup and reservations before purchasing.
Formula: ticket total − (pass price + uncovered tickets + required supplements). KRW conversion is a reference and excludes card fees.

Passes and IC cards: know the difference

Rechargeable IC cards such as Suica, PASMO and ICOCA are payment methods. Loading money does not turn them into a JR Pass or unlimited regional ticket. A pass has its own network, transport modes and validity.

Displaying a digital pass on a phone is different from issuing an IC card in a mobile wallet. Support depends on the device, sales market and app, including Galaxy and Android models. Check the operator’s current requirements.

Tokyo Subway Ticket covers Tokyo Metro and Toei subways. It is different from the similarly named Tokyo Metro-only 24-hour ticket and does not include JR, private railways or buses. SUNQ is for designated buses and some ferries, not JR trains.

Check coverage for your region

Do not choose a 3-day or 7-day pass by duration alone. Products with the same duration can differ in region, sales channel and transport mode. Compare your journeys and check the end date in the calendar.
