5-day prices and your start date#

Adult prices apply from age 12 and child prices to ages 6–11. You need a non-Japanese passport and Temporary Visitor status. The pass runs for 5 consecutive days from the first date you select. Official prices and conditions

Even on a 7-day trip, you can compare a pass for just the 5 days containing your longer journeys. Instead of automatically starting it on your arrival date, count backward from the last day of long-distance travel.

If you travel from Kyoto to Shin-Osaka before boarding the Sanyo Shinkansen, check which train you will use for the first leg too. For Hiroshima, first compare Kansai-Hiroshima and passes for other departure points.

Seats are not assigned automatically#

Even when a pass includes reserved-seat charges, it does not automatically assign a seat. Reserve before boarding an all-reserved-seat train. Reservations are available at ticket machines or counters; buying the pass through JR-WEST ONLINE TRAIN RESERVATION also lets you reserve seats online.

Even passes with unlimited seat reservations direct you to a ticket counter from the 7th reservation onward. Check the seat reservation conditions, then verify each train’s date, departure station and seat number using the reservation confirmation checklist.

Official online purchase and station collection#

  1. Follow the booking link on the official Wide Pass product page and choose your start date and passenger numbers.
  2. After paying online, keep your reservation number and the identification number you set.
  3. After arrival in Japan, collect the pass at a station that handles that product. Bring your reservation number, 4-digit identification number, payment card and passport.

Machine collection requires a passport with an IC chip. A station that issues ordinary tickets does not necessarily issue every discount pass. Check product-specific collection restrictions in the JR West collection guide.

Refunds: official online purchase versus travel agency#

For an unused pass paid for on the official website, request a refund online before collection or at an applicable sales location in Japan after collection. The separate conditions table lists a ¥560 fee for other passes. Deadlines depend on your bookings: on the start date, they include the first reserved train’s departure time when you have a reservation, or 23:30 when using only unreserved seats. For an agency exchange order, contact the seller before exchange. After exchange, the conditions describe a refund for an unused pass within its validity period at an exchange counter in Japan, less 10% with a ¥220 minimum. Do not mix these Wide Pass agency-exchange refund conditions with official online purchase conditions.

Will you travel enough to justify the higher price than Mini?#

For short journeys around Osaka and Kyoto, compare the Mini Pass and individual tickets. Longer limited express journeys give you a reason to compare the full Wide Pass price. Do not assume savings: calculate the covered fares and additional costs separately.

A five-day worksheet for longer journeys

Fictional comparison, not current fares: suppose one adult uses 20–24 November for the journeys below. Replace each invented amount with a quote for the actual travel date and same seat class.

Date / directionTrain and seat to quoteInvented full-ticket amount
20 November: Osaka → Kinosaki OnsenEligible limited express, ordinary reserved seat¥4,500
21 November: Kinosaki Onsen → OsakaEligible limited express, ordinary reserved seat¥4,500
23 November: Shin-Osaka → Okayama → Shin-OsakaEligible Sanyo Shinkansen, ordinary reserved seat¥6,000 each way = ¥12,000

In this fictional worksheet, covered individual tickets total ¥21,000 versus the listed adult 5-day Wide price of ¥12,000, a difference of ¥9,000 before extra costs. Days without a listed train add no assumed saving. Budget separately for uncovered access and confirm seats before treating the itinerary as bookable. A cheaper fare product or fewer journeys could change the decision.
