Nozomi vs Hikari: which Shinkansen should I take to Osaka?#

From Tokyo to Shin-Osaka, Nozomi is the faster, more frequent Tokaido service; Hikari is a useful national-pass option without the Nozomi special ticket. Both are Shinkansen services, not different railway systems.

ChoicePractical difference
NozomiFewer stops and more departures; add the national-pass special ticket when using that pass.
HikariMore intermediate stops; compare the exact departure and connection, with eligible national-pass travel included.
KodamaServes intermediate stations; useful when your destination is skipped by a faster service.

JR Central’s Tokaido service comparison. “Fastest to Osaka” needs a starting point: a Tokyo comparison does not establish the best route from every city. Shin-Osaka is the Shinkansen station; add onward travel to your actual destination.

Is Nozomi more expensive than Hikari?#

For the same Tokyo–Shin-Osaka Ordinary reserved-seat example, yes. The currently linked Smart EX fare table lists ¥14,520 for Nozomi and ¥14,200 for Hikari/Kodama: ¥320 difference for one adult, one way, in regular season.

The table is dated 1 April 2025 and was checked on 13 October 2026. These are Smart EX product examples, not all station, discount or travel-date prices. Official fare table. A national-pass Nozomi special ticket is a different charge; do not confuse it with this ¥320 individual-ticket difference.

RouteCandidates and important exclusions
Tokyo/Shinagawa ↔ Shin-OsakaCompare the national pass with individual Shinkansen tickets. Tokyo Wide and Kansai Wide do not cover the Tokaido Shinkansen. A national-pass journey on Nozomi needs the special ticket.
Shin-Osaka ↔ NagoyaThis is the Tokaido Shinkansen. Do not confuse it with the Sanyo Shinkansen coverage of Kansai Wide.
Shin-Osaka ↔ HiroshimaConsider a product covering this section, such as Kansai–Hiroshima. Kansai Wide’s Shinkansen coverage reaches Okayama, not Hiroshima.
Hakata ↔ HiroshimaThis is the Sanyo Shinkansen. A JR Kyushu Northern or All Kyushu pass alone does not cover it. Check Hiroshima–Yamaguchi or Sanyo–Sanin coverage.
Hakata ↔ Beppu/YufuinConventional-line limited express travel in Kyushu. Check a product such as Northern Kyushu and seat reservations for your specific trains.

Replace city names with station names. Osaka and Shin-Osaka are different stations, as are Fukuoka Airport and Hakata. See Hiroshima options by starting point and Kyushu routes and seat conditions for detailed coverage.

How to compare individual-ticket search results#

Smart EX individual Shinkansen ticket conditions describe products combining the basic fare and limited express charge for the Tokaido, Sanyo and Kyushu Shinkansen. Connecting journeys on conventional lines may cost extra. Do not treat a limited express charge alone as the full journey cost.

  1. For Tokyo → Osaka, search the Shinkansen section as Tokyo/Shinagawa → Shin-Osaka.
  2. Record the payment amount for the same train, date and seat. Check each direction separately for a return trip.
  3. Add separate journeys such as accommodation → departure station and arrival station → accommodation.
  4. For the national pass, include supplements such as the Nozomi special ticket in the manual cost calculator.

This site is not connected to live fares, seat availability or timetable data. It does not present invented fixed prices or journey times as quotes for your actual travel date.

Why do Shinkansen tickets cost so much, and when are they worth it?#

A Shinkansen quote includes high-speed travel charges as well as the base journey fare. Before calling it expensive, compare the full cost and elapsed time of each option: station/airport access, luggage, transfers and arrival time—not only the advertised fare.

Using the regular-season example above, two ¥14,200 Hikari journeys total ¥28,400. Compared with a ¥50,000 official-online Ordinary 7-day pass, that leaves ¥21,600 of additional covered travel before the pass breaks even on ticket cost. This worked example excludes local connections, discounts and other journeys. Enter your own figures in the calculator.

Choose according to the time you save and the itinerary you actually want. The fare alone does not establish the railway’s business reason for its pricing. Smart EX fare components.
